Licensure requirements for school psychology programs for Virginia.

In order to be eligible for licensure, students must complete certain requirements that include taking and passing a licensure examination. This practice is one that many schools use, and as a result the Virginia Department of Education (the state agency that regulates Virginia public schools) has set up a set of rules that are similar to state practice. The state has published a “state policy manual” on general guidelines for school psychology programs and how to prepare students for licensure. (See below)

Licensure Examinations

Students taking the licensure examination must take and pass a state-administered licensure exam before they can be licensed. The exam consists of a section (1 hour in length) where the student demonstrates his or her knowledge of the skills a licensed school psychologist should know, as well as a section (one hour in length) in which the licensed student demonstrates the knowledge required to perform his or her job duties. The state requires a student to pass this exam twice, with one hour on the first pass and 1 hour on the second.

Exams that are administered for certification by Virginia’s Council of School Psychology Licensure Examiners and approved by the Virginia School Board may be used only the second or third time (up to three times) in a five year period, except in emergencies.

Exams that are administered by individual boards can be passed for a maximum of eight times, and if passed eight times, the school may issue an initial license directly to the student and allow the student to take an exam to obtain a certificate to allow him or her to practice.
