What Is Human Factors Psychology?
Human Factors psychology is the study of human factors and how they affect individuals’ well-being. It is often referred to as Psychology with a Human Edge, or Human-centric Psychology, and seeks to create a framework to understand the relationships between individual and context when looking at human and everyday human-related phenomena. Human Factors Psychology investigates, interprets and contextualizes the effects of different human and environmental characteristics with respect to the well-being of the individual and society. It can be defined as a holistic “human” or “environmental” psychology, which seeks to understand “individual people from the inside-out” by employing a “human-centric” or “context-sensitive” orientation that is able to integrate different psychological factors and understand how they all work together to create a whole that is beneficial for the individual.
For years, a number of human-centric psychologists have been focusing on how people’s perceptions could make an important contribution to the psychology of a person, how personality can be shaped by our experience at home at school and the work environments we work in, and how social networks and social connections can impact our well-being and relationships. Through the development of this area of psychology, psychologists have been able to better understand what makes us and others tick; how our experiences in the physical, mental and social is affecting our psychological and mental well-being; why we do certain things, what motivates us and how our thinking, feelings and behaviour can be shaped by the environment as well as the personal traits that we bring to that environment. In fact psychologists today are able to make more accurate predictions of how individuals will make decisions and how we as an entire society would be affected as a result.

What is ‘human factors psychology’ (HFP)?
This field of study, which includes both psychology and human factors, has been defined by the Human Factors Society as “the application of psychology to the study of interaction among human systems and to the understanding of how these systems can produce adverse consequences.”

The role and responsibilities of an HFP professional can differ depending on the type of organization, the profession, and/or the geographical region where the company operates. The HFP career path can begin by gaining experience and education in basic human factors research concepts and methods, including:
- Determining the needs and desires of the human user and understanding and measuring the performance of human systems.
- Determining how to use systems to perform better on a range of performance, satisfaction, and risk measures.
- Using data and information to make sound judgments about product design, manufacture, marketing, or operations and to develop and evaluate strategic plans or systems.
- Developing, revising, and maintaining quality systems in organizations and businesses and making recommendations for improvement and best practices.
